Wells

wells somerset
Take a stroll round its medieval town centre, past the amazing cathedral and unique Bishop’s Palace, and you’ll begin to understand why the famous city of Wells is popular with locals and tourists alike.

For the budding explorers among you, there’s also plenty to discover beyond the city limits: The Mendip Hills, Somerset Levels, Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole caves, as well as Glastonbury Tor to the south.

The city itself is ancient, dating back to the 8th century when early churches and a settlement formed around a set of its namesake wells, two of which remain in the grounds of the cathedral and Bishop’s Palace. It then developed as a trading hub, and is known for its involvement in the Monmouth (or West Country) Rebellion in the 17th century.

At just a 45-minute drive from Bath, and less than an hour to Bristol, you’ll never be short of options for activities on the weekend.
