Improving our primary and community care workforce through education and training
Since 2016 we’ve been working to increase opportunities for our workforce to educate and train by being the local coordinator for workshops and courses.
What is Somerset Training Hub?
The Somerset ICS Primary Care Training Hub is here to support the development and wellbeing of primary care teams across Somerset. Our focus is on filling workforce gaps, creating learning opportunities, and helping practices and Primary Care Networks (PCNs) thrive. By addressing local challenges, such as Somerset’s rural geography and the need for a stronger workforce pipeline, we want to help primary care teams feel equipped to meet the needs of their communities.
If you’re part of a general practice or PCN team in Somerset and want to learn how we can support you, then we’d love to hear from you on somersetlmc.sth.office@nhs.net.
About Somerset Training Hub
Somerset Training Hub was set up in 2016. Our job is to help improve the capabilities and capacity of the workforce in primary and community care through increased education and training opportunities for individuals and teams across professional and organisational boundaries.
We believe that the workforce is the main asset of the NHS in Somerset and that workforce education and training are the major levers for sustaining and improving the quality of patient care.
What we do
SUPPORT WORKFORCE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT TO RESPOND TO LOCAL NEEDS AND ENABLE THE REDESIGN OF SERVICES WITHIN PRIMARY CARE AND THE COMMUNITY.
IMPROVE EDUCATION CAPABILITY AND CAPACITY IN PRIMARY CARE AND COMMUNITY SETTINGS THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF MULTI-PROFESSIONAL EDUCATORS AND CREATION OF ADDITIONAL TRAINING PLACEMENTS.
IMPROVE EDUCATION QUALITY AND GOVERNANCE AND ACT AS A LOCAL COORDINATOR OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR PRIMARY AND COMMUNITY CARE.
How Somerset Training Hub can help the workforce
We believe we can use education as a real lever for change and help the existing primary care and community care workforce feel more confident and capable and help develop the new style of workforce that is necessary to meet the demands and challenges we face. Somerset Training Hub will work in all localities, across a wide range of primary health and care employers and providers of education.
How work is funded
Somerset Training Hub has received funding from HEE for 2018/19 to support the primary and community care workforce to support system transformation in line with the Somerset Sustainability and Transformation Partnership’s (STP’s) workforce priorities.
We will be commissioning and organising multi-professional workshops, providing education and training for all workers in primary and community care.
We will achieve this by working primarily with the Somerset GP Education Trust (SGPET), recognising them as the major provider of education activities for practice nurses and GPs in Somerset, but also working with a wide range of other education providers.
Education events
Details of education events being held can be found on the Somerset GP Education Trust website, under courses. Events specifically being run by Somerset Training Hub will have this in the title of the event and will state if there is a fee. SGPET events are run for Somerset GP Practices.
