Here in Somerset we love to celebrate our history and culture, so it’ll come as no surprise that Somerset Day is a highlight on the calendar.
It’s celebrated on 11th May to mark the date that Alfred the Great rallied the people of Somerset against the invading Vikings, and has evolved into an annual celebration of everything great about the county.
Here’s a taste of the highlights from Somerset Day 2025:
Flying the flag
A campaign to fly the Somerset colours really took off; we really enjoyed seeing everyone fly the flag far and wide, even in New York!
Langport Art Trail
With over 15 venues for everyone to explore, the first ever Langport Art Trail was a great success.
The trail gave a spotlight to lots of local artists, with visitors invited to peruse a carefully curated route through shops, cafes and local businesses. And people could also join workshops lead by the artists, allowing them to get involved and create art of their own.
eat:Taunton
Taunton celebrated Somerset Day in style with a food festival. eat:Festivals “are grown from the land around us. They bring the very best West Country food & drink producers and artisans together at festivals in town centres across Somerset.”
Thousands of attendees filled the town square in Taunton to enjoy over 100 different food stalls.

Born 84 years ago here in Pilton, surrounded by dairy cows from the start… highlights of the summer were trips to Burnham on the train through the beautiful Somerset levels, where thousands of wading birds would rise from the water to the sound of the oncoming steam-train. In Burnham we played our hot summer days on the beach, riding donkeys and watching Punch and Judy… you can see why I love Somerset so much!” – Michael Eavis, CBE
