What was your career like before GP?
So I’ve actually been here in Somerset for about 16 months. My career has been quite varied, I initially trained as a gynaecologist for seven years, and then became a GP up in the Bristol area. I was a partner at Weston-super-Mare and then moved down to Devon, and was a partner in a practice there for 17 years, and then decided I wanted a bit of a change of career and bit more of a challenge to move somewhere different, so I came here sixteen months ago as a salaried GP.
What’s the community in Chard like?
The community in Chard seems to be a very friendly community, really nice place to work. I don’t live in Chard, I still live over in Devon, but I really have enjoyed coming over here and getting to know the people in the community. Seems to have everything that you could possibly need in it.
Tawstock Medical Centre is a fantastic friendly place to work. Really, I think, the modern way of moving forward in general practice. It encapsulates the importance of having a name doctor and continuity of care, but at the same time what they do at this practice is ensure that you get time allocated to do the other bits of general practice, which is the admin, time to do your medications, time to look at all your results. So it’s very much about looking after you as a doctor as well as enabling you to do your job properly.
What’s the team like at Tawstock Medical Centre?
The team here is a very collaborative team and it’s one of the benefits of working here – we all work together for our patients. So we’ve got a mix of nurses, HCAs, doctors, extended scope practitioners. We divided into the urgent care team and we have the continuity of care of routine appointments. So really we all work together to make sure that all patients are looked after effectively and efficiently, and the importance of actually having follow-up appointments is that, as a doctor, you can provide that continuity of care which comes after you’ve actually had an acute episode which you’ve had to see the urgent care team for. We’ve also got fantastic admin staff here, and they support us clinically and we support them as well, so it’s a very collaborative practice.Come and join us
